Educational Timeline

An Historical Event

Who knew? From the abacus to the adding machine and then to a technological advance that changed education for all times.

PRESENTING

THE CALCULATOR

I remember well taking the mathematical sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Tests and the advanced placement mathematical exams. Now, while I did do well, I can just imagine what would have happened if I had a calculator. While they had been invented (mass production began in 1947), they were not yet allowed in the testing room of standardized exams.

There is much controversy about the calculator. Some believe students should be allowed to use them beginning in elementary school while other educators are opposed to their use until students begin advanced mathematics.

(Believe it or not, there are people who actually collect old calculators.)
