Microsoft Corporation designed a next-generation operating
system that would provide a graphical user interface (GUI) and
multitasking environment for IBM computers. Windows was in competition with
IBM's Top View program, but this program did not have a GUI and was discontinued
a couple years later. Microsoft shipped Windows 1.0 on November 20, 1985.
