1997: U of I Online Begins

Kristiana Burtness

In 1997, The University of Illinois began a program called University of Illinois Online that offers Internet-based courses.
These courses are offered through all 3 campuses. The courses are mainly geared towards non-traditional students seeking a degree. From 2001-2002, the number of courses increased from 1753 to 2932. In the same time period, the number of students participating increased from 19,764 to 34,549. These online courses are a great learning resource because they increase opportunities for students to earn degrees from a distance on a more flexible schedule.
