2001: A Genome-wide Scan for Linkage to Human Exceptional Longevity Identifies a Locus on Chromosome 4

An article published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on August 27, 2001 made significant progress into the search for information on longevity.

Annibale Puca writes: “These linkage results indicate the likelihood that there exists a gene, or genes, that exerts a substantial influence on the ability to achieve exceptional old age. Identification of the genes in humans that allow certain individuals to live to extreme old age should lead to insights on cellular pathways that are important to the aging process…The linkage study described here markedly improves the efficiency of such association studies by defining a region likely to contain polymorphism(s) with significant influence on lifespan.”

It appears that the gene might not be all that you need to help live a long life.  Today the latest “miracle” drug is pointed towards Human Growth Hormone, not available until mid-1998 when Genentech and Eli Lilly began to market a synthetic version.  It performs such wonders as “los[s] of body fat, gaining lean muscle mass, having sexual function restored, gaining strength and stamina, increasing energy levels, reducing wrinkled skin, thickening and even re-growing hair, lowering blood pressure, balancing cholesterol…” www.Awakenhgh.com

2198:  Debate Continues Between HGH and Chromosome 4.

As reported in the Global Times, August 24, 2198:

We have all heard it before, whether or not the Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is necessary for a full life span to be reached, or if gene replacement of Chromosome 4 is sufficient.  Although it is estimated to have an answer in the next 36 months, America has decided to begin infusion of HGH into America’s drinking water.

Europeans are upset because the IEC has not mandated HGH into water supplies yet. Again, the debate over cost is holding up a firm decision. Although HGH and Chromosome 4 is subsidized by the InterNational Health Services (INHS), the wait to begin treatment for these items can be as long as 20-25 years.

Most people agree that if only the two men who began the quest for life eternal would share their secret, much of the cost and worry would be saved. Dr. Steven Novil, former Director of the American Longevity Research Institute in Chicago, Illinois, and Dr. Don E. Johnson, former President of the American Anti-Aging Society, stunned the world in 2123 when news leaked that they had turned themselves into human guinea pigs. The news became public when the Doctors threw birthday parties for themselves and insisted on having the correct amount of candles for their cakes.

They still won’t state the amount of HGH they ingested, nor when they began treatments. They also won’t say at what age they had Chromosome 4 replacement surgery performed. But Drs. Novil and Johnson are currently the oldest people known on this earth, aged 256 and 253 respectively. However, skeptics don’t place much faith on the validity of any secret that would be revealed by the Doctors. Last year both men failed their Alzheimer’s tests.
