A relatively new technology with a promising future


By 2010, 625 million homes will own DVD players

Based on current growth, forecasters are predicting tremendous surge of DVD in homes, schools, and organizations. This is due to the relative availability and versatility of quality DVD hardware and software. The number of DVD player homes quadrupled in 1999 as consumers were attracted to the the superior quality of the format over VHS. With the increased demand, the widespread introduction of affordable players is expected to follow.

Interestingly, the country that will lead the way in DVD comsumption by 2010:China. It's estimated that there will be DVD in 124 million Chinese homes, or 20 percent of the world total. As mass distribution continues, current software revenues are expected to increase proportionally - seven-fold by 2010, reaching $64.7 billion. By then, the U.S. will account for a third of the total global market.
