The Big Picture: Selection and Design for Image Information Systems

Abstract

While imaging is a relatively recent technology for information science, its use raises several new as well as known issues in access and retrieval. Discussion will include a brief examination of some ethical, social, and technical problems along with reminders of basic information system degign considerations.

Biography

Lois F. Lunin has an A.B. from Radcliffe College (Harvard University) and an M.S. in Information Science from Drexel University. She is a Fellow of three organizations; AAAS, Institute of Information Scientists, and the New York Academy of Medicine.

Her Faculty appointments include Instructor: The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the School of Hygiene and Public Health, Adjunct Associate Professor, Cornell University Medical College (Radiology). For eleven years she was Vice President of Herner and Company, a Washington, DC. consulting company where she directed contracts for information projects with institutes at NIH, Department of Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Disease Control.

Her many publications include more than a dozen chapters and articles on electronic image information, the first chapter being published in 1987 in the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology.

She has served twice on the ASIS Board of Directors, been chair of three ASIS Special Interest Groups, several ASIS committees, and most recently on the Information-Technology Planning Committee of the New York Academy of Medicine and the Editorial Board of the Journal of Medical Practice Management. She is editor of Perspectives, a journal within the Journal of the American Society for Information Science (JASIS) and is a contributing editor to Information Today and a consulting editor, Bulletin of ASIS.

She has been a consultant to the Pan American Health Organization (World Health Organization) reviewer for the National Science Foundation and the British Library, and has lectured in Australia, China, England, Venezuela and in many parts of the US.
