Born in 1958, I grew up on the campus of Smith College, in Northampton, MA. During school, I worked as a cab driver, as staff in a halfway house for retarded adolescents, and in a bicycle shop. I married Maggie English (currently employed at the Curry School Foundation, University of Virginia) in 1978, after my sophomore year in college. We have three children, two dogs, and a cat.
